How Apple Intelligence could change your HomePods
HomePod mini and the full-size HomePod don't have the power to support Apple Intelligence. Why is that? And how should that change what you do with your smart home in the coming year?

Apple's WWDC is a great time to preview what Apple has coming for the next year of software updates. While it might not seem like a big year for Apple Home, you might have missed a lot more buried in press releases and footnotes. To remain relevant Apple is going to have to work this out. Next destination is tech is all of us will have an individual AI with us and embedding one in our home is logical. The question is will it be networked AI or on device AI. On device AI fits Apples agenda but that does not make it a guaranteed winner and it remains the more challenging and expensive of the two for implementation. Looking to Nvidia it is clear that a basic device like their Jetson sits at around $600 and we can expect this to come down rapidly.

    Another great video !...The iPhone 13's processor the A15 Bionic chip has the equivalent processing power of the M1 which is getting the "Apple Intelligence" feature...It even has the same Neural Engine as the M1 all iPhones sold since including the iPad mini 6 Apple needs to get this out of beta and in people's hands that's paid for this processing power. Much love from all the UK 😊

    If you insult Siri you get "that's not nice" or " I won't respond to that" but if you start with "thank you for" or "you're good at" Siri is happy to respond to any insult. The next Siri is going to profile me to share my comments to my government if I speak against it.

    I had a contractor install this outdoor camera about two years ago. Recently my WIFI network changed and I had to reset all wireless devices to the new network. This meant I had to reinstall the Eve outdoor camera. The original packaging was long gone. Eve told me the QR code would be on the mounting plate. So I took the device apart to find it. It was not there, or anywhere else. Eve told me, and I quote, “you need to replace the device.” I am flabbergasted. Eve neglects to put the QR code on the secondary location, makes it therefore impossible for me to reinstall the device, and expects me to buy another one. I’m am done with this company. I just wish the camera were heavier so I could at least use it as a boat anchor. (I really wanted to like these guys. I even previously overlooked the fact that neither of the 2 motion detectors I bought from them worked reliably either.

    I don't think your concept of scenes and assistants, and such is the same as mine. I don't WANT to install buttons and switches all over my house. I buy smart enabled devices and I do not mind (even currently) how Siri can turn my lights to a different hue, or lock my door. The whole smart home I thought, was getting things done NOT manually. Putting a button ON a desk instead of IN the wall is just installing a button or switch in a non traditional manner to me. I want my assistant to do this stuff....I want it to know MY voice and not that of influencers repeatedly saying her catch phrase and when I ask him/her to place something on my grocery list, it goes on MY grocery list. Being able to have Siri know and keep information about me secure in my eco system would be great for future orders through door-dash...Hey Siri order my go to Door-dash order and pay with my Apple card. Just convenience is all I need, but install more manual items all over my house...naw dawg that's gonna be a no from me.

    It would make a lot of sense for them to make a new HomePod to gain new ai systems and the rumor about it with a screen has got me wondering as the rumor suggested we will see it with a iPad mini sometime this year but there is no new iPad mini at the moment to support the ai features so Apple could just make a new iPad mini with the m4 chip which would handle the ai since Apple announces product in the fall with iPhones, Apple Watch, iPads sometimes, AirPods, and this new HomePod could be a consideration in September or October this year I this this new HomePod could unveil the rumored homeOS which could be something to make users home more alive with ai in their systems and products I definitely think this is possible this year but we will see.

      I am not sure on the homeOS side and I bet the new iPad mini would come with an M2 chip. Still it would likely have the specs to handle Apple Intelligence and could be a cost-competitive option for using at home.

      They likely won't get LLM-based processing of requests, unless there's a way to send that over to more powerful devices in your home. That will likely be slower and not coming soon as Apple hasn't announced anything around it yet.

    Doesn't this need the newer chips to work meaning all current HomePods won't work with Apple Intelligence? Guessing this is why they didn't mention it at all and are probably looking to update the chips in September

      There’s a good chance older models could relay requests to a newer model, and older ones would continue to work as-is without new hardware in the home. But yes I bet there’s another hardware part to drop here before they have more to say

    I have been considering why Apple is allowing us to finally pick which home hub is our default “connected” hub. It may relate to your postulation that we’ll need a beefier hub for controlling AI based commands. If we have just a few new hubs with internal hardware sufficient for executing AI commands, and one of these is the default connected hub, the other hubs in the house could serve as intermediaries between you (wherever you are in the house) and the AI-ready hub. Given how many hubs I have now - especially the HPg2 hubs - I really hope some sort of considered approach like this will be provided. There’s little impact on delay time for sending and receiving the language between our nearby hub and the AI hub and this is the only reason I see for not implementing an approach of this ilk. Other than the boatloads of money they could make from people upgrading…

    • @EricWelander

    Why didn’t apple use the “Private Cloud Compute” branding to mean end-user owned devices teaming-up to process requests locally. If an apple user has an iPad with M4, a MacBook with M3, a TV with A15 Bionic, and an iPhone with A17 pro. That is a lot of processing power sitting unused at any given moment. If we estimate these chips to be on average about a powerful as M1 that is like an M1 Max chip, but potentially more.

    • @EricWelander
      @EricWelander День тому

      It’s a good point that all that power is sitting there. I think the mesh between all that could potentially be slow. But I also think that’s why Apple has gated so much to newer devices. I think they want Private Cloud Compute to only run when it’s absolutely necessary and not for every request from a HomePod mini

Now, what happens if you touch or get near them for the purpose of allowing them to now be just an external microphone that will transfer your search query back to your iphone that will do all the A.I. stuff and then broadcast it back to your homepod/mini that way no one has to run out and start upgrading their homepods/minis

  • @tamerhashem8010

    HomePod mini is dumb as it stands today. It does not execute orders by itself except for playing music or setting an alarm. My observation that it goes back to the iPhone or iPad to execute HomeKit or shortcuts orders. That worked with Apple since it is on device processing in a sense. Keeping the same approach as is would be more logical, otherwise you will pay for redundant hardware that you don’t need. 50% of the times, my iPhone picks up the voice command when I’m in closer proximity to the HomePod mini. And when it does not, the Apple Remote stays stuck on the iPhone screen. Since they established a secured line between devices on the network, capable Apple devices can receive the instruction from another device, process it and send it back. Consider it as a local cloud.

  • @tedallen5002

  • @GaryMetzker
    @GaryMetzker День тому

    Mmm. Not sure I agree. Seems like there will be a hierarchy of intelligence delegation depending on what is required for a request. If a request is too complicated for a smart speaker the delegate it to a local IPhone, IPad, or MBP with a more advanced neural chip. If that isn’t enough, delegate the request to the Apple Intelligence cloud. If that isn’t enough, delegate the request to ChatGPT. The hierarchy could be configurable depending on privacy needs. Seems like we should be able to continue to use cheap edge devices for local IO while delegating to higher intelligence to l newer local devices or external clouds. Old devices may be recycled to work as local border routers or smart displays.

    Hopefully, with the early fall release, we'll get an M-series-based AppleTV (8k?) that will provide more powerful gaming AND the ability to act as a selectable primary home hub/clearing house for Siri voice requests. I think this is part of the reason why they opened up allowing non-Apple HomeKit-enabled devices to be able to essentially act as remote microphones for Siri requests--your HomePods will essentially become smarter versions of that kind of device where Siri requests are concerned.
